The Verge Gallery and Studio Project is the concept of local software and internet entrepreneur Jesse Powell. Acquiring the building in 2007, Powell's initial vision was to convert the more than 13,000 foot warehouse into subsidized studios for local and emerging artists on an invitational basis. Not long after setting out on this goal Powell met area artist Gale Hart who encouraged him to use part of the sprawling space to build a large contemporary art gallery. And so the Verge Gallery and Studio Project was born.
Hart, best known locally as both an exhibiting artist and gallerist (her own artspace, A Bitchin' Space, is located less than a block from the Verge) conceived of the design for the gallery and graciously took time away from her own work to oversee the construction and early management of the project. Together Powell and Hart envisioned a dynamic contemporary art space with the hope of introducing the Sacramento region to cutting edge work by established and mid-career artists.
Lisa Marasso and Liv Moe joined the Verge team in 2008 as co-directors. Together they oversee the curation, promotion, and development of the Verge Gallery and also assist Powell in the oversight of the studio project, scouting out artists, and developing a data bank of resources for Verge artists to draw from.
By 2010 the Verge Project will add a resident artist component to the studio project, inviting artists to live and work in Sacramento for six month periods. The Verge's resources will not be limited only to those who reside with its walls, however. Over time the Verge website will offer vital resources to area artists with info about juried exhibitions and grant opportunities.
Whether through our programming, studio resources, or community outreach the Verge has something to offer most any art enthusiast. Please join us in making the Verge a valuable addition to Sacramento's already thriving art community!
